Autonomous cars, once implemented, could further atomize individuals, making us even more isolated during our commutes. My graduate thesis in product design proposed interventions that leveraged av technology to do the opposite - and Serendipity is one exploration of that theme.
The app keeps track of passengers’ proximity to interesting places and nearby friends, offering real-time suggestions for meetups or spontaneous detours. The goal was to make these daily drives more social, turning routine journeys into opportunities for real-world connection.
Most people tune out on their way home from work, experiencing that feeling of ‘highway hypnosis.’ They travel through new places but rarely interact with them. Serendipity changes that by showing nearby cafes, hiking spots, or even friends who happen to be close by.
With just a tap on “Request Serendipity,” the app automatically reroutes the car, giving users a chance to meet up with friends or explore somewhere new, making the commute more engaging and less isolating.
