Machine Bowl
The machine bowl has three points of contact with the counter, yet appears to hover in place. Made from stainless steel, it serves as an elegant display for produce and kitchen essentials. Its unique design prevents condensation and helps keep food fresh.

Process and context

This bowl was inspired by Philippe Starck's iconic Alessi lemon squeezer. I 3D printed it in blue resin, but have since found it challenging to locate a skilled cast maker capable of producing it in the desired metal finish.

The design was intended to bring the elegance of mechanical gears into a more refined setting. I first made several prototypes out of laser cust acrylic before deciding it needed to be cast in steel. I designed and sketched the form and my colleage Teng Yu rendered it in CAD.
